Day in the Life - Weekend Edition

Affiliate links used in post.

I love reading other blogger day in the life posts, but I feel like our normal day is rather boring and no one would be interested. During the week we are fairly consistent: get up, Daniel takes the girls to school, we work, I pick the girls up from school, cook something that resembles dinner, and then we do baths/brush teeth/snuggle/read books/get the girls to bed. Our weekends, however, are so varied week to week I thought it would be fun to give you a snippet into how one particular day looks for us.

6:05 a.m. Caroline walks in our room, and I look over and realize Daniel has already left for work. They had a huge sale going on this weekend, and he had to be at work at 6. Caroline climbs in bed with me and we snuggle/drift back to sleep/watch t.v. until about 6:30.

6:45 a.m. Emery is awake now, too, so I grab her and we all go downstairs. Caroline sees that Daddy assembled her brand new bike while we were all sleeping last night (he's a keeper!). I change Em's diaper, and heat up some strawberry bread I made the night before. They eat most of that, so I get Caroline a banana and Emery some applesauce to round it out. During the week they eat alot of cereal, so I try to cook a breakfast on the weekends. I promise Caroline tomorrow I will make pancakes and bacon.

7:30 a.m. The girls are both done and they play in the playroom while I fold some clothes and start some more laundry. I also get ready for the day. When I'm done getting ready, Caroline requests some nail painting so we play beauty salon and I paint all of Caroline's nails, and one of Emery's hands and all her toes. She has yet to let me complete a manicure on her. She gets too impatient and is happy enough with just one done. We used piggy paint which is non toxic and is perfect for little ones that may still bite their nails/chew on their hands/etc.

8:30 a.m. I get the girls dressed after battling with Caroline on why she can't wear her Elsa dress outside. She finally caves in and agrees to put on a flamingo dress that is appropriate to wear for bike riding. She has had a tricycle before, and her new bike takes some getting used to. I was sooo proud of her though, because after about 10 minutes of struggling, she is basically a pro! Emery was also so happy Caroline's old tricycle is officially hers, and she scooted around on it (no pedaling yet, bless her heart her feet may never touch the pedals). We played outside for 45 minutes until I could tell the heat was getting to Ems. I coaxed them inside for a snack.

9:15 a.m. They both eat yogurt for a snack while I fold some more laundry and grab Caroline's gymnastics leotard out of the dryer. I get Caroline changed for gymnastics, braid her hair, put Emmie's hair in pigtails and we get out the door for gymnastics around 9:55 a.m.

10:15 a.m. Caroline's gymnastics class starts, and Emery and I hang out watching all the kids practice for the next 45 minutes. Emery does pretty well hanging out and watching what's going on, but she is also 20 months old, so by the end she is running around everywhere. If Daniel isn't working, I normally leave her at home. I will be glad when she is old enough to take class too, because I think her biggest frustration is she isn't allowed out on the floor.

11:05 a.m. We head home from gymnastics, and get home around 11:20. I immediately get lunch together (hot dogs, pineapple, and edamame for the girls, salad, pineapple, and edamame for me). By noon, Ems is done and I get her down for a nap. Caroline isn't far behind her, and they are both at least laying down by 12:20.

12:30 p.m. I vacuum the family room, clean up the kitchen from lunch, and sit down to write some of this blog post. Their naptime is usually my only free time on the weekends, since Daniel works most Saturdays and Sundays (he is in retail). After I get some stuff done, I sit on the couch and catch up on Scandal.

2:00 p.m. Caroline wakes up just as Daniel gets off work early. She comes downstairs and her and daddy go outside so he can check out her new bicycle skills. Emmie is up 10 minutes after that, and I bring her down and we play outside until Oma and Opa (my parents) get to our house, at about 2:45 p.m.

3:30 p.m. It's time to head out for Caroline's very first gymnastics meet! Her gymnastics program does a "fun meet" where kids get to show off what they have learned and they treat it like a real competition. It's a good way for the kids to learn how competitions work and become confident enough to perform in front of others. We get there about 3:45 p.m., and it starts at 4. Caroline has a great time, and at the end stands on the podium grinning ear to ear to receive her trophy.

5:15 p.m. We leave the competition, and we all head out to eat together. The first restaurant we tried was packed, so we headed to O'Charley's...which I honestly haven't eaten at in about 5 years. The first bonus - kids eat FREE every day, and my dad and Daniel got prime rib and said it was good. I got the fish and chips, and it was decent. Emery DEVOURED a kids' plate of fried shrimp and broccoli.

6:30 p.m. We get home, say our goodbyes to Oma and Opa, and get the kids in the tub for a quick bath before Em's bedtime. Caroline scribbled all over the tub with her bath crayons, and told me it was a picture of Rapnuzel. We get Emery to bed around 7:10 p.m., and she goes straight to sleep.

7:45 p.m. We start the bedtime process with Caroline. I brush her teeth (using the Oral-B magic toothbrush timer app - it's amazing and Caroline will brush for a full two minutes with it!). Daniel is in charge of bedtime stories tonight (Caroline gets to pick 2 books every night before bed), and then it's lights out. She probably falls asleep around 8:15 p.m.

After the girls are asleep, Daniel and I aren't far behind. The night before, I had taken the girls to the Discovery Center by myself and Daniel worked late. I love busy, fun days, but they drain me!

And that's how our days go on the weekends! Do you guys stay as busy on the weekends? I'd love to hear what a typical day looks like for you :)

Five on Friday: April 21, 2017

__one__ Easter weekend started off great, with the girls dyeing Easter eggs. I let Caroline be the primary egg "dye-r", and let Emery do the painting. They both love crafts and I love seeing them do an activity together! We used this glitter/shimmer kit this year, and I think it was a lot of fun for both of them.

__two__ While Easter was wonderful, our lovely children passed the stomach bug to us, and it conveniently hit us at about 4 pm Easter day. While I was thankful we were fine during the morning for church/Easter egg hunts/etc., it was still awful. Ever since Caroline started daycare, we all get the bug about twice a year. The last round was in December, so I hope we are good for awhile.

We got some great pics of the girls though before the bug hit! I was so pleased with how their dresses ended up fitting. I got them around this time last year, and just prayed they would fit when Easter came back around!

__three__ Caroline has her first gymnastics "meet" next Saturday. I am so excited to watch her perform her routine and show off all she has learned! My parents are going to come up and watch, and she is going to be so tickled they are there to see her. She's only been doing gymnastics for two months, but it's been amazing watching her gain confidence and learn new skills.

__four__ After Easter, I am always itching for summer to come around. Even though the kids are in daycare during the summer and we obviously still work, summer still feels so much more laid back and easygoing (plus, no school traffic on my way to work!). My favorite part of summer is grilling, and after we've spent a sufficient amount of time playing outside and lounging on the back porch, I like to come inside and make the girls some shaved ice treats. We got this shaved ice maker last year, and it works great for the occasional sno-cone.

__five__ I have decided to try to become more active...not necessarily to lose weight, but just to feel healthier and have more energy. Lately I feel so sluggish and as soon as I wake up I am just wanting to go straight back to bed. I ran jogged/walked 1.2 miles a week or so ago, and about passed out. It was ridiculous. I know you have to start somewhere, but WOW. So to motivate myself, I bought some new kicks! I'm eager to see how they hold up.

Five on Friday: Ready for Easter!

Affiliate links used in post.

After a crazy work week in South Dakota (you can read all about how my travel plans went awry here), it is finally Easter weekend! The girls and I have big plans tomorrow to dye some eggs and I will be preparing their baskets after they fall asleep. I am so ready for a fun filled weekend. Here's some random thoughts I have this week.

__one__ Two summers ago, I got a pair of Reef flip flops, and I have been in love ever since. They are SO comfortable.  Mine have become rather ratty and worn, and I am in the market for a new pair. I can't decide between these two. I love the look of the champagne ones below, and they would go with anything and everything. You can find them on Amazon here.

__two__ The girls had their Easter parties at school on Wednesday, and they had a blast! I love getting pictures from the girls' teachers, especially when they are together at school. It makes my heart happy that they get to visit with each other occasionally during the day. Daniel was kind enough to sign us up for sausage balls for the party, so I prepped those Sunday before I left to go out of town.
Bless Emery's teacher for putting her hair in pigtails every day. Daniel tries, but he just isn't great with girl hair. We bought a bunch of these elastic hair ties, and sent them to school so they are fully stocked to do the girls hair.

__three__ While we still aren't done with the bathroom remodel, Daniel did finish the floor, and I think it looks amazing. Once the entire bathroom is done, it's going to look completely different!

__four__ I have deep set eyes, and I was having an issue every time I wore eyeshadow. It would crease so bad I basically just stopped wearing it. I have started using this Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer, and wow. If you gals have the same issue as me - check it out. My eyeshadow stays put from 6 am to 10 pm.

__five__ We are planning on dyeing all our Easter eggs tomorrow. I bought some more "fancy" kits this year and I am eager to see how they do.

A quick tip for you guys - try dyeing your eggs with a kitchen whisk! It helps the kids not accidentally break them and makes it mess free!

When Things Don't Go As Planned

So, let me start this post by saying, I never had a desire to visit South Dakota.

Also, it is not easy to get to South Dakota (specifically, an hour west of Sioux Falls, SD).

But, I had to go for work on Monday. So, I arrived at the Nashville airport with plenty of time for my first flight, and away we went.

We arrived in Chicago around lunchtime, and after rushing to our gate in order to make our connecting flight, we learned our flight was delayed. No big deal - just gave us some time to grab some lunch and decompress for a minute.

Well, a minute turned into 4 hours, and then our flight was cancelled. And, you guessed it, no more flights were heading to Sioux Falls from Chicago that were available.

We rushed to the gate agent, and he set us up with a flight to Minneapolis, with a connecting flight from Minneapolis to Sioux Falls. We were scheduled to get in around 9....which was 6 hours behind schedule, but doable. We were relieved. We even took a selfie with the gate agent we were so happy.

Then our next flight was delayed.....and yet we would still make it in time for our connecting flight. We got on our plane and, in a surprise twist, THEY FORGOT TO LOAD THE BEVERAGE CART. Of course, that was absolutely necessary for our 1 hr flight. So we waited 20 minutes, and consequently, missed our next flight out of Minneapolis.

Now, at this point, we are delirious. We are rebooked on the last flight out of Minneapolis to Sioux Falls, on a different airline, and we wait two more hours to eventually depart at 10:10 pm. Of course, that flight required 40 minutes of de-icing while on the tarmac, and so we didn't land in Sioux Falls until midnight.

The worst part - while I carried on my bag and had my luggage, two of my coworkers' luggage was left in Minneapolis. Way to add insult to injury.

Needless to say, we weren't physically dragged off the plane by airport personnel, and we did make it safe and sound to our destination. So while I am exhausted and semi-complaining, I am also thankful for that! And since I don't normally have such major issues when I travel (which I used to do ALL THE TIME for work), I really can't complain at all. All we can do is laugh :)

I'd love to hear everyone's worst travel stories. We can commiserate together!

Five on Friday: April 7th

Hello everyone! I hope everyone had an awesome week. I know we have been super busy - and on Monday I am heading out to South Dakota for a work trip (my first trip to SD, and not somewhere I ever thought I would visit!). Here's what we have been up to this week.

__one__  I made a really good new chicken carbonara recipe this week. You can't really see the chicken peeking out from underneath all the noodles, but here is what the finished product looked like:

It was super creamy and filling, and even the girls were licking their plates at the end. The only variation I made to the recipe was I didn't use grilled chicken, I just pan cooked chicken breasts on the stove before starting.

__two__ So, I am kind of a jewelry fanatic. The thing is - I like to mix up my jewelry so much that I don't like to pay alot of money to buy new things. A few months ago, I decided to try rocksbox, which is a jewelry subscription service (similar to StitchFix). You basically pay $21/mo, and they send you 3 different pieces of jewelry at one time to try. You can keep it as long as you want, or switch it out as much as you want! Plus, you can apply the $21 towards the purchase of anything you receive in the month. They have all kinds of designers, like Kate Spade, Kendra Scott, and more!

In what is the MOST AWKWARD SELFIE EVER, here's the earrings and necklace I got this week in my box.

You can signup a try one month free (seriously, completely FREE) using my referral code kristinjbff1 here

__three__ If anyone needs any last minute Easter basket ideas for toddlers, I recommend these Munchkin 360 sippy cups. They are a game changer in our house. It makes the kids feel like "big girls", but yet it's still a sippy cup!! They have ones without handles as well, which is what Caroline uses - although lately, she wants to use cups without lids, and has spilled water in the kitchen at least 459,000x this week.

Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup, Green/Blue, 7 Ounce, 2 Count

__four__ We got family pictures made at the beginning of March, and we just got them back. I was sure every single one was going to have Emmie giving the photographer the stinkeye, but I was so pleasantly surprised! Michelle Barnett Photography did them (she's local to the Southern Middle Tennessee area) and she did a fantastic job.

__five__ Surely my kids aren't the only ones who take tunnels or other normal toys, and turn them into something else? Caroline kept telling Emmie "I'm a worm!"

Have a great weekend, everyone!
